Rainbows Grief and Loss Programme

At Great Smeaton School we offer a support programme called Rainbows. Rainbows is a programme which fosters the emotional healing of children, young people and adults who are grieving a loss through death, divorce, separation or any other painful transition in their lives.

Rainbows is a 12-14 week programme and during these weeks, the children are involved in a number of activities based around emotional healing.

The children are encouraged to fill in a Rainbows Journal which is kept confidential. The importance of confidentiality is shared before every session which builds the trust within the group. Information is only shared with the facilitator and the leader.

This programme is held in a safe environment within school where the children feel happy to share their problems with the course facilitator. It is important for the children to be supported and to know that their loss is being recognised and not ignored. Children are encouraged to discuss their feelings with peers who may be experiencing similar issues. They are helped to articulate their feelings by the trained facilitator.

Rainbows also supports self-esteem, trust, confidence and resilience. It promotes emotional development, and positive healthy relationships.
