Reading for Pleasure.

At Great Smeaton we believe that a lively, welcoming and well resourced school library gives children positive experiences of books, helping to create confident, enthusiastic readers and engage children in life-long learning.

Our library shares the ethos and values of the whole school, being a centre for learning and literacy development, and is run by our year 5 and 6 children who take their turns to host daily library sessions so that every child can take home books to read for pleasure in addition to their structured reading scheme book. Every month our children also have the opportunity to win a book token by entering a photo competition showing them reading their books in the most unusual, inventive or entertaining place. These are displayed in our library to remind us that, “Books shouldn’t be daunting, they should be funny, exciting and wonderful.” (Roald Dahl)
